Resume and Cover Letter

50 - 60 Minutes

  • Information on Career Services: appointment types, career development program, and career fairs.
  • Targeting resume to the company/industry and job position: researching the organization and analyzing the job posting.
  • Reflecting on qualifications and how best to present them on a resume.
  • Structuring resume strategically: section headings and what can be included in each section, alternative ways to arrange the sections.
  • Formatting details: length, "look," and logistics.
  • Writing a cover letter to demonstrate interest and highlight key skills and experience.

Enhanced Resume and Cover Letter

80 Minutes

  • All the topics covered under the above.
  • Group and individual activities to discuss and practice resume development with time for questions.

Job Search Skills

  • Improving job search success through targeting job search.
  • Advanced job search strategies: networking, cold calling, LinkedIn, and informational interviews.

  • Learning what networking is and how to use it to your advantage
  • Understanding the benefits of networking
  • Developing your network: who, when, where and how to network confidently
  • Learning how and why to develop your Personal Brand to differentiate yourself and add value to employers
  • Individual and group exercises to jumpstart the branding process and practice networking
  • Note: The content of this presentation overlaps with the Job Search Skills presentation.

LinkedIn Best Practices

50 - 60 Minutes

  • Information on Career Services: appointment types, career development program, and career fairs.
  • What is LinkedIn, and why use it.
  • How to use LinkedIn with a live demonstration of different functions.
  • Developing LinkedIn profile: picture, headline, summary, education, experience, and projects.
  • Managing privacy controls and settings.
  • Enhancing LinkedIn profile and increasing level of engagement.

NOTE: This presentation does not allow for step-by-step development of the students' LinkedIn profiles during the presentation. However, students can follow along with the live demonstration if they already have a profile.

Interview Techniques

50 - 60 Minutes

  • Information on Career Services: appointment types, career development program, and career fairs.
  • Preparing for the interview: researching the position and organization; preparing talking points; planning the logistics of dress and professionalism.
  • Creating a good first impression and handling interview questions professionally.
  • Answering behavioral and scenario questions (e.g., "Tell me about a time when...," or "What would you do if...") using the STARS approach (i.e., with a structured story or example)
  • Wrapping up the interview effectively: asking questions and following up.

Enhanced Interview Techniques

80 - 120 Minutes

  • Practice in pairs or small groups of common and behavioral/ scenario questions with time for feedback and questions.

Career Planning

  • Information on Career Services: appointment types, career development program, and career fairs.
  • Understanding the career development process as a journey and learning how to navigate it through reflection and action.
  • Individual and group exercises and activities to jump-start the career development process.
  • Introduction to an approach for goal setting.
